HyperVoisins

Hypervoisins (or La République des Hyper Voisins) is a renowned grassroots community movement born in Paris's 14th arrondissement. Founded in 2017 by Patrick Bernard, the project aims to radically boost social connection —transitioning from neighbours who say hello 5 times a day to those who interact 50 times a day. 

The Movement Involves ...

• Community Building: Transforms neighbourhoods into hyper-connected, supportive networks using bustling neighbourhood group chats. 
• Shared Activities: Organizes massive street banquets (sometimes hosting up to 1,500 residents at a single communal table), potlucks, and peer mentorships. 
• Mutual Aid: Fosters local collaboration to help vulnerable or older residents stay in their homes, exchange services, and create shared infrastructure.

How It Works in Practice ...

• The Goal: It treats neighbourhood conviviality as an "economic asset" that reduces isolation, lowers emergency service costs, and strengthens the local economy.
• Urban Planning: It serves as a bottom-up complement to the top-down "15-minute city" concept. 
• Global Recognition: The model has gained international traction, drawing attention from urban planners worldwide for its effective approach to tackling the modern epidemic of loneliness.

Murmurocratic Community Action

​In a town near me, a community project had halted due to financial difficulties. As a result, a whole area along the roadside into this tourist area town was strewn with debris from the building renovation. It was there for months with no one quite knowing what to do with it.

Then one day a local resident decided to act and created a GoFundMe page for it which a number of locals contributed to. A skip & a truck was donated and volunteers came willingly to work on the clean-up.

On the chosen clean-up day, those called to help came and did the whole site in one day. A completely collaborative, joy-filled effort on everyone's part. Someone even donated planted flower pots afterwards to pretty up the site.
